(670 The Score) In another big blow on the injury front, White Sox starting second baseman Nick Madrigal is officially out for the rest of the 2021 season.

Madrigal on Tuesday underwent surgery to repair the proximal tendon tears in his right hamstring, which will end his season, the team announced. The operation was performed by Drs. Nik Verma and Shane Nho at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Madrigal is expected to be ready to go for spring training in 2022 without restrictions.

Madrigal, 24, suffered the injury while sprinting to first after hitting a slow chopper to third base in a loss to the Blue Jays last Wednesday. In the immediate aftermath of his injury, the White Sox and doctors were weighing whether he’d need surgery or if rest and rehab could lead to a recovery in time for him to return to game action late in the season.

Madrigal, 24, had been a key player for the White Sox, hitting .305 with a .774 OPS in 54 games.

The clarity on Madrigal’s health will lead the White Sox to browse the trade market for help sooner or later. The MLB trade deadline is July 30.
