Details around Musgraves’ 4th studio album have been hard to come by since the 32-year-old songstress teased it on the cover of Rolling Stone earlier this year.
Musgraves says the new album will be a shift from her previous project Golden Hour, as it was inspired by personal struggles she’s faced over the last few years. Those struggles include the COVID-19 pandemic and her, public divorce from, Ruston Kelly, her husband of 2 years.
“Golden Hour was, in a lot of senses, escapism. It was fantasy. It was rose-colored glasses.” Musgraves told Elle before describing the new album with the world “realism.”
“I haven’t spoken much about this chapter, and I don’t feel like I owe that to anyone, but I owe it to myself as a creator to flesh out all these emotions that I’ve felt, and I do that through song,” she continued.
Musgraves also shared the album features musical stylings comparable to artists including Bill Withers, The Eagles, Daft Punk, Sade, and Weezer. While some may find the artists who inspire her “off brand” for a Country artist, Musgraves makes it clear she isn’t owned by any particular genre.
“I feel like I don’t belong to country in any way on one hand, but on the other hand, I’m deeply rooted in that genre. So I’m not owned by it.”
