New York State on Tuesday unveiled fatality statistics from nursing homes and adult care homes. However, Niagara County was not notified of the deaths at nursing homes and that they are only reporting on the deaths of verified lab results. The state reported seven deaths from nursing homes or adult care homes.
"We've said many times that there will be individuals who are positive with COVID-19 that we will never know about because they will never be tested," Niagara County Chairwoman Rebecca Wydysh said. "We expect those numbers are much higher than we're actually reporting...Where our public health nurses are in constant contact with those positive test result cases that we're aware of, that will not include nursing home residents. The state will be handling those cases."
WATCH: Daily update from Niagara County
Wydysh said of the five deaths reported by Niagara County, they know of only one that is in a nursing home facility.
"It obviously doesn't add up," she said. "Today, Governor Cuomo also acknowledged this discrepancy in the numbers. We are going to continue to report in the way that we have to be consistent and accurate to the best of our knowledge. We certainly want to be transparent and we want for you to have the correct information and to be aware of the additional reports that we'll continue to update you on. We hope the state is able to figure out a way to report those situations to us in an accurate way so we can keep these discrepancies out of the picture and give you a true and accurate number here in Niagara County."
