BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - Congressman Brian Higgins announced more than $2.4 million in grant money for the VA Western New York Healthcare System to address veteran treatment.

The largest of the grant money is $1.4 million over five years for research to learn ways to simulate heart muscle regeneration. The project is called "The Functional Role of Exosomes in Stem Cell Mediated Cardiac Repair" and will focus on heart disease.

The second grant is $824,000 for a five-year pilot program to develop and test a skills-focused behavioral treatment for veterans with a history of concussions. Its goal is to reduce psychological distress for combat veterans who experienced concussions in the past.
