BUFFALO (WBEN) - Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard has announced the recovery of a male victim in the east branch of the Niagara River.
Search teams located and recovered the individual around 11 a.m. Wednesday, downriver from the South Grand Island bridge, where a swimmer went missing Tuesday afternoon.
Sometime earlier to the emergency call, two male swimmers entered the water from a Grand Island dock and attempted to swim to a bridge pylon. One of the swimmers noticed the second male was no longer visible, and a search ensued.
The incident commander paused the search last night due to diminishing daylight and safety concerns, but it resumed Wednesday morning.
A spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office says they do not yet know if yesterday's missing swimmer was the person recovered, and the victim has been turned over to the medical examiner for an autopsy and proper identification.
