BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - The Buffalo Common Council recently introduced a measure which would reduce the legal speed limit by schools.
Many of you who drive near a City of Buffalo Public School likely see a sign suggesting that you should slow down. However, these signs are technically not enforceable because they do not follow the New York State Department of Transportation requirements.
"I've had several different groups and parents and block clubs ask me to look into having reduced speed limits around the schools," Delaware District Councilman Joel Feroleto, who introduced the bill, told WBEN. "A lot of other municipalities have 15 or 20 miles per hour around school zones. I've asked the City of Buffalo Department of Public Works to look into that and see what they can do to ensure that the area around schools are the safest they can be for the children."
City engineers met with the common council last week and are expected to return in February with proposed changes.
Feroleto noted that there's been an increase in students who walk to school in recent years.
