Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Nurses at Buffalo hospitals were able to take a break Wednesday evening as Buffalo's finest from the Buffalo Police and Fire Departments saluted the nurses and front line medical workers on 'Nurses Day'.

Sirens were wailing and lights flashing as nurses were cheered and saluted by the uniformed men and women of the police and fire departments.

Simultaneously, nurses were honored in the same way and at the same time at ECMC, Buffalo General and Mercy Hospitals

"These are difficult times for all of us and we know that nurses work to exhaustion", said Mayor Brown outside ECMC Wednesday evening.

"It's awesome to have heroes thanking heroes", said ECMC CEO Tom Quatroche as he stood before the ECMC nurses along with members of the BPD and BFD.  "They're on the front lines just as much as we are", added Quatroche.  "The world is beginning to see how important nursing is to our community", said Quatroche.
