(WBEN) - Throughout New York State, business at local DMV offices has slowed, but not stopped.

With offices closed in both Erie and Niagara Counties, what exactly are county Clerks looking after?

The state has said that licenses and registrations expiring March 1 or later are extended until further notice, and inspections expiring March 31 or later have been extended until further notice as well.

Because of the new guidelines, much of the paperwork over the past month has focused on people buying or selling vehicles.

“Over the last three weeks, we’ve done over 2,500 transactions,” said Niagara County Clerk Jose Jastrzemski.

Jastrzemski said all of those transactions were done remotely, either by mail or over the phone. Most of the transactions have been vehicle purchases and license plate surrenders.

In Erie County, the focus has been on doing curbside service instead of transactions over mail.

All DMV offices are closed per an order from the state, but Erie County Clerk Mickey Kearns hopes that can be changed soon to lessen the financial burden on the County.
