Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - Daily updates from Governor Cuomo have given Western New Yorkers a good idea of what is happening across the state, and in particular, New York City. But, should we concern ourselves with these state-wide numbers?

Maybe not so much.

“We have our own curve, we own our own curve.”

Dr. Tom Russo, Chief of Infectious Diseases at UB’s Jacobs School of Medicine told WBEN that what’s going on in New York City is almost irrelevant to what we are experiencing in New York City.

“The most critical factor in dictating the number of cases (in Western New York)… is our social distancing,” Russo said, noting that it isn’t quite fair to base our area’s ‘peak’ on what downstate is experiencing.

Because of that, Dr. Russo thinks there is little reason for people to be driving themselves crazy tracking numbers on a day-to-day basis.

“I think the most critical thing to know is what we’ve talked about,” Russo said referencing social distancing guidelines. “Dwelling on the number sometimes can be counterproductive.”
