BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - Erie County is reporting 1,812 cases of coronavirus and 101 deaths as of Wednesday afternoon.

There are currently 217 people in the hospital with 105 people in the ICU.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said that the spike in death numbers was because Erie County was notified by New York State of deaths at area nursing homes. Poloncarz said that there were 35 deaths from nursing homes but not all of those deaths may have been of residents of Erie County.

Poloncarz also announced that Erie County received 29,000 N95 masks from New York State on Tuesday. The county also received 192,000 surgical masks and 84,000 gloves. Those materials will be given to health care workers based on need and by what New York State mandates.

There have been 6,952 people tested for coronavirus in Erie County. Those numbers are now listed on Erie County's coronavirus map. However, active cases and recoveries are no longer being reported. Poloncarz said these numbers will no longer be reported because recoveries are self-reported and the numbers are skewed if an individual does not report the number. Instead, Poloncarz said they are using hospitalizations and ICU cases to identify the current status in Erie County.
