BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - The risk of flooding inside your home increased as a result of the quick melt of the snow.

Whether you live by any of the area tributaries or even if you haven't shoveled the snow near your main doors, the possibility of flooding is there these next couple of days.

Dominic Cortese reminds you to check your sump pump to make sure the water flows smoothly but to also invest in a backup water sump pump.

"If you are in an area that is prone to flooding, you have probably lived through this in the past," Cortese told WBEN. "Elevating things that are delicate or you need to protect in your basement like your furnace, hot water tank, your washer and dryer, is a good idea to have on a regular, permanent installation if you're prone to flooding. If you live in an area where water typically collects, you should be aware of where that water collects and maybe in the future you can invest in a water drainage system to help minimize water collection."

If you're new to dealing with water in your home, Cortese reminds you not to walk in the water because it could be electrically charged unless you have rubber boots and to have a utility pump on standby to get the water out.
