Tuscarora Reservation, NY (WBEN) A man is dead and a homeowner wounded after a home invasion led to a shootout in Niagara County, police said Sunday.

Chief Frank Previte of Lewiston Police said the shootout happened shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday on Mt. Hope Road on the Tuscarora Indian Reservation. The homeowner told police he exchanged gunfire with three armed people who entered his home and they fled in a car.

The vehicle was later stopped in the town of Wheatfield after a high-speed chase with police. Acting Niagara County Sheriff Michael Filicetti said three suspects were taken into custody and a fourth was found dead in the car. He did not say whether the man was fatally shot by the homeowner.

The resident was treated at the scene for gunshot wounds and sent to Erie County Medical Center. Names were not immediately released.

The motive of the home invasion is under investigation. Tuscarora community leaders are working with the Lewiston Police Department, state police and Niagara County Sheriff’s Office on the case.
