Hunkering Down: Winter Storm Approaching

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - The winter snow is set to arrive on Saturday throughout all of Western New York.

The National Weather Service has a winter storm warning in effect from 10 a.m. Saturday to 6 p.m. Sunday for the entire region. Anywhere from 8 to 14 inches of snow is expected in the cities of Niagara Falls and Buffalo while wind gusts as high as 35 miles per hour will produce significant blowing an drifting snow.

The wind chills will push temperatures into negative degrees, and Erie County issued a code blue ahead of the storm.

"Things are going to deteriorate rapidly starting late (Saturday) afternoon and into (Saturday night)," National Weather Service Meteorologist Kirk Apffel told WBEN.

Governor Andrew Cuomo on Friday issued a travel ban for buses and tractor trailers on the thruway beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday.

WHAT...Heavy snow and blowing snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 8 to 14 inches expected. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph will produce significant blowing and drifting snow. 

WHERE...Niagara and Northern Erie counties. 

WHEN...From 10 AM today to 6 PM EST Sunday. The heaviest snow will be late this afternoon through tonight.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Travel could be very difficult. If you must travel, be prepared for severe winter driving conditions with deep snow cover and very low visibility from heavy snow and blowing snow.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Widespread accumulating snow and blowing will create dangerous travel conditions.
