Insurance a Possible Issue During Flood Watch

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) With flood warnings and watches up through midweek, homeowners may need to go through their insurance policies to see what's covered.

Ray Caputo of the Wolf Agency says you can buy insurance from the National Flood Insurance Program, but there's a catch: you had to have already signed up. "You get nothing in the first 30 days from the date the money from where you purchase it. So a lot of people will be disappointed because anything that would happen will happen before then," says Wolf. "You can minimize your loss by getting a lot of your stuff out of your basement because there is some coverage available for damage to items in a basement."

Papa says those who get it usually are required to do so under their mortgage or if they live in a flood prone area. "Homeowners should look to see if it's prudent, but with the NFIP, what they cover is no where near as broad as you would under a homeowner's policy," says Papa.
