BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - More than $2 million of federal funding was allocated towards research for krabbe disease at the Hunter James Kelly Research Institute at the University at Buffalo.

Krabbe disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that occurs in one in every 100,000 people. It destroys the protective myelin in nerve cells and impacts the brain and spinal cord. It is often fatal.

Researchers will use the grant funding, which totals $2 million over five years, to increase the understanding of which cells are involved in Krabbe disease in order to identify limitations of today's treatments toward the goal of improved results.
