Wilson, N.Y. (WBEN) - As officials plan to come together for a 'listening session' on the troublesome high water levels in Lake Ontario, a Lakeshore Flood Warning is posted for the shoreline Tuesday.
The combination of very high lake levels and moderate east-northeast winds will result in greater wave action and an increase in lakeshore flooding on the western portion of Lake Ontario. The Flood Watch is posted through Tuesday afternoon. The National Weather Service warns lakeshore flooding may increase, especially in bays, inlets, and other low lying areas along the shoreline. Wave action will produce an increase in shoreline erosion.
This latest threat comes as the International Joint Commission will be hearing from elected leaders in the impacted areas during a listening session being held Tuesday at the Greece Town Hall in the Rochester area.
The Commissioners with the IJC, who assumed office last week, will make their first site visit to the Lake Ontario shoreline to meet elected officials and better understand their concerns.
Rep. Chris Collins is applauding the IJC for participating in the session. “Despite having just been confirmed, these Commissioners are already hard at work learning about the high water levels in our community and the devastation being caused,” said Congressman Collins. “Western New York finally has a voice with Jane Corwin serving as the U.S. Chair and, I applaud all the Commissioners for taking the time to listen to our concerns as elected officials.”
The high water levels along the shoreline are causing serious problems for many property owners and businesses and have been the subject of numerous visits by Governor Andrew Cuomo and other elected leaders.
