Life in quarantine in central Italy

Carla and Rosanna Colella, LAquila, Italy

L'Aquila, Italy, (WBEN) - Life is getting tougher in coronavirus-hot spot, Italy.

Experts estimate that the United States is only weeks behind the situation in Italy--where more than 12 thousand cases have already been reported.  The death toll has surged to over 800.

Images of Italians greeting each other with hugs and a kiss on the cheek, are just a memory these days. "It doesn't happen anymore," chuckled Colella. "We don't do that. We say hello from a distance, and there's no touching each other."

Colella is worried about her 85 year old mother. "The virus is very dangerous for the elderly. I can't visit her. I talk to her by video chat. I don't have any symptoms, but I don't want to give her the virus."

The Elementary school teacher who teaches English said schools remain closed. She stays in touch with her students through Skype or video chat.

We found Colella with the help of WBEN's Brenda Alesii. The two are cousins.  Colella thanked us for taking an interest in what is happening in Italy.  She's hoping everything will be alright.  We are too, Carla.
