North Tonawanda, NY (WBEN) North Tonawanda Police say a man who was found in a stolen car in the Erie Canal Saturday night took his own life.
Prior to entering the canal Mr. Rogers parked on the street near the boat docks on Service Drive and stayed there for approximately 35 minutes. He was facing westbound in the westbound lane and then proceeded to make a hard left across the east bound lane, crossed over the grass onto the bike path and turned west onto the bike path and then out of view of the camera. Moments later his headlights shone on the south side canal bank and appears to be the time he entered the canal.
Police say it was seen floating in the canal with its headlights on. Upon arrival by first responders, the vehicle sunk before anyone could get to the vehicle which was in the middle of the canal between North Tonawanda and Tonawanda.
His death has been ruled a suicide and the cause of death have been deemed to be drowning.
