Albany, NY (WBEN) Governor Cuomo says the New York State Fair has been canceled for 2020. Cuomo says the decision was made out of an abundance of caution.
Cuomo also announced that state-run casinos and movie theaters will currently remain closed as the state government continues to review the science and facts on their safe reopening.
"We are closely monitoring the gauges on the reopening valve to see if the infection or hospitalization rate is going up, and we will tighten or loosen the valve as necessary depending on the data. If we see spikes in data or lack of compliance, we will slow down the reopening valve and adjust as necessary," Governor Cuomo said. "New York City goes into Phase III but with no indoor dining. The numbers show we are right where we want to be, but what's happening around the country is a cold reminder that we need to continue being cautious and smart and disciplined - no one wants to go back to the hell that we went through."
Cuomo says the decision to cancel the state fair pains him. "We invested money, we redid the whole state fair, and it's been an economic boon for the region, but this year we're going to have to cancel it, and it personally makes me unhappy, but that is where we are," notes Cuomo.
Cuomo also says there's no final decision on whether schools will reopen. "We've asked every district to come up with a plan on what reopening will look like in their district," says Cuomo. "We have some time, it's a fluid situation. When we get the data, we will make a decision."
