Niagara Falls, NY (WBEN) - Officials are monitoring a century-old grounded barge that broke loose during a storm last week in the river just above Niagara Falls.   The rusty iron scow had been stuck since 1918 on rocks in the upper rapids above the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side before last Thursday's high winds dislodged it.

"What we're speculating is that over time the combination of the rusty scow plus the wind and moving water led to the moving of the scow," said Niagara Parks CEO David Adames.

Could the ship go over the falls?

"There is a chance," Adames said. "We're closely monitoring. It has rested in its spot... so right now things are status quo, the ship has anchored itself again, but we are continuing to monitor."
