Collins announced his resignation in a letter sent to Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday. The resignation was official as of 9:04 a.m. Tuesday during a brief session of the House of Representatives.
"We ought to have a special election as quickly as possible," Schumer said. "Because this is an area that's so diverse with its farms, manufacturing, and tourism and 700,000 people. It needs representation. They ought to have an election as quickly as possible."
Schumer did not comment whether or not he thought Collins should have resigned sooner.
