NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y. (WBEN) - A second employee from the Niagara County Sheriff's Office has tested positive for coronavirus.

Information released by the office said that it was a civilian support staff employee that tested positive for the disease.

"The employee's symptoms were identified through our employee health screening process which is performed before any employee is authorized to enter the facility," the office said.

The employee works in the same area each day and the sheriff's office said they had "limited contact" with other employees or inmates.

The sheriff's office said that cleaning has been enhanced and they are mandating all correction officers and staff to wear surgical masks who are unable to maintain social distancing because of their work.

Twelve total employees have been tested for coronavirus. The other positive test was a corrections officer.

"The safety and health of our staff and inmates continues to be my number one priority "Acting Sheriff Michael Filicetti said. "I am grateful to our staff for remaining diligent in trying to prevent COVID-19 from entering the Niagara County Correctional Facility."

According to the COVID-19 heat map in Niagara County, there are 166 confirmed cases of coronavirus. However, those numbers were last updated on Thursday. An official from Niagara County said they will be updated on Saturday.
