TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WBEN) - For the second time in ten days, a tractor-trailer hit the Young Street overpass.

The latest incident happened on Thursday morning when a semi with Oklahoma license plates hit the overpass in Tonawanda. The driver was not injured according to individuals who were at the scene.

"It's going to happen again," City of Tonawanda Mayor Rick Davis said while noting that many drivers don't pay attention to the signs clearly indicating an 11-feet-6-inch clearance. "They drive off their GPS. It's happened countless times before and will happen again."

City officials previously contemplated installing a bar before trucks reach the bridge. If the truck strikes the bar, it would also strike the bridge. That plan, according to Davis, did not continue due to liability concerns.

"There is quite a few homes and the space between where city property ends and private property starts, the lots are very close to the road," Davis said. "Trying to install something there would be problemsome. The easiest thing is for these drivers to pay attention to the traffic signs."

However, these truckers don't pay attention to the signs. Cheryl Ward, who operates Matt's Automotive on Young Street, consistently posts photos and videos whenever the trucks collide with the bridge.

Davis said the bridge has been there for more than 100 years.
