BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) – Officers from the Buffalo Police Department were shot at overnight after they responded to a group of people on illegal motorbikes.

No officers were hurt, according to an update by the department. The incident happened at 1:15 a.m. at Walden Avenue and Harmonia Street. When police officers arrived, one person fled on foot. As officers chased that person, a second person riding on a dirtbike shot multiple rounds at the officers and hit the person who was running away in the back of the knee.

"That person has been treated and, I believe, released from ECMC," Buffalo Police Captain Jeff Rinaldo said. "The person that fired at the officers is still outstanding."

Rinaldo praised the bravery of the officers involved and said they will not be on any leave from the incident. They are continuing to investigate this incident to find out who the shooter was and if the person who fled on foot has any association.

"We we've seen all through the summer here, we get a lot of reports on people driving dirtbikes, motorbikes, and ATVs, on city streets," Rinaldo said. "It is a problem and has caused a lot of issues through parts of the city. When we have an opportunity to stop that behavior, we do. Unfortunately...when they arrived, the situation escalated very quickly."
