Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - If you're paying attention, you're probably aware that meteorologists have been hinting at the possibility of a significant winter storm this coming weekend across Western New York. And as time ticks away and we reach midweek, forecaster confidence is increasing and the National Weather Service is now saying a "major winter storm is becoming more likely for the weekend".
While it is January and it is Western New York, many were hoping that something might change and all the hoopla would fizzle and we'd be dealing with another false alarm. That doesn't seem to be the case.
Here's what we know so far.
The National Weather Service forecasters are saying the storm system should get under way during the day Saturday as leading edge of snow reaches western New York, with the storm likely peaking Saturday night into early Sunday. Meteorologists aren't yet forecasting accumulation amounts but do indicate the system will also bring with it the likelihood of lake effect snow as well as a general storm snowfall.

— AccuWeather (@breakingweather) January 15, 2019At Accuweather, meteorologist Eliot Abrams says the exact amount of snow for the region isn't a certainty as of yet. "A difference of 50 to 100 miles may mean the difference between an inch or two of snow and slush to a foot of snow with this storm," Abrams added. "For that reason, all of the answers with snowfall for the Saturday to Sunday storm are not set in stone at this point.
