Buffalo, NY (WBEN) When New York's plastic bag ban takes effect next year, counties have the option of collecting five cents for paper bags. While one Erie County lawmaker wonders why a vote hasn't taken place, another says it's not necessary.
But Hardwick says such a vote is unnecessary. "The program as passed is on an opt-in basis. If we do nothing, there is no five cent fee," notes Hardwick."The only way that would happen is if the Erie County Legislature votes to opt in and there's no interest in that."
