BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - "One of the first things people say when talking about Oishei Children's Hospital is, I never thought."

Janet Snyder from Kiss 98.5, who started the radiothon for Children's Hospital over 20 years ago, says she's talked to countless parents who say they never thought they would need Oishei. They never thought their child would get sick or in an accident. "That's when it hits home," she told Susan and Brian on WBEN Thursday morning.

Buffalo is fortunate to have a free standing children's hospital dedicated to helping save the lives of babies, kids and mothers. "It's such a blessing along with having the support of the community," added Snyder. "It's like a security blanket."

Oishei is a Children's Miracle Network Hospital. That means no child is ever turned away. If they need care, they get it. That's where Radiothon funds come into play. And every dollar raised goes to the hospital.

This year's radiothon is taking on new meaning. Last year the event was paused due to Covid. "We're excited to be back and ready to help our community in a safe way and make some miracles happen," said Snyder.

Dr Steven Turkovich, the Chief Medical Officer at Oishei, says he gets a special feeling walking into Oshiei each day, that doesn't get old. "You walk into the building and have an amazing sense of teamwork, spirit and resiliance."

Turkovich says seeing even the youngest patients, that may be less than a pound, grow and thrive and overcome tremendous challenges is inspiring to him and his team of nurses, therapists, physicians, and pharmacists.

"Often you think of children being sick, as being sad. But we bring a lot of warmth and happiness and feeling to the hospital and we can only do that with the support of the community so I thank everybody for their donations and the continued support of the hospital," said Dr. Turkovich.
