Cole Beasley, future quarterback?
Probably not, but the veteran wide receiver looked quite comfortable unleashing a touchdown pass to a wide-open rookie wideout Gabriel Davis for a touchdown on Sunday.
The nifty-looking trick play, which are increasingly becoming the calling card of offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, came early in the second quarter.
In motion on the play, Beasley first caught a lateral toss from quarterback Josh Allen in the Bills' backfield, in what looked to be a swing pass or quick screen of some kind. But Beasley instead pulled up, reared back, and uncorked the scoring strike to Davis.
The touchdown pass was the first of Beasley's career, and the second this season by a Bills wideout. The veteran -- a former high school quarterback who transitioned to receiver in college -- had made two pass attempts in his seven years with the Dallas Cowboys, both going for incompletions.
Davis, for his part, said he was confident all along that the Chargers would be fooled. The impressive-looking rookie now has four touchdown grabs and is averaging 16 yards per-catch on the season.
The double-pass play turned heads with Bills fans and football observers.
Back in Week 10 against the Arizona Cardinals, wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie was credited with a touchdown throw on another trick play, a 10-yard pass to Allen. It was the second receiving touchdown of Allen's career.
The two touchdown passes by non-quarterbacks was a first for the Bills since 2009, when running back Fred Jackson and punter Brian Moorman did it.
The Bills have recorded four touchdown passes from positions other than quarterback since Daboll took over in 2018, tied for the most in the league in that time, according to ESPN's Stats and Info.
