BUFFALO, NY (WBEN) To Buffalo Bills play by play man John Murphy, Sunday is a "prove it" game for the Bills, to a certain degree. "I don't want to get too carried away because there's an awful lot of the season left, two-thirds, in fact," he said.
During his weekly appearance on WBEN Friday, Murphy said he thinks the Bills have already proven that they can play with anybody. But he does think it's an important game when it comes to playoff implications.
"The Bills have already surpassed Kansas City in terms of talent and what they're able to do, but I guess they need to prove that they are the preeminent team in the AFC."
The same could be said for the Chiefs, now 2-2 on the season. This is being looked at as a prove it game for them as well. "The Chiefs have to demonstrate that they still can do what they've done for a couple of years now. They won last week, but they need to play better. Their defense is last in most defensive categories. As explosive and as high powered as their offense is, you can't get by with the NFL's worst defense. They still have a lot to prove," said Murphy.
The Bills did not have the pass rush last season to neutralize Patrick Mahomes. That was the focus of attention for the Bills during the off season. They acquired Greg Rousseau and Boogie Basham to get better at rushing the passer. It worked in the Bills first four games, but can they do it against the Chiefs? Murphy says that's the number one goal for the Bills Sunday night.
Chiefs Tight end Travis Kelce has had his way with the Bills for a long time now. Murphy was asked if the Bills are prepared to cover him, with or without Matt Milano, who has been out with a hamstring injury. Milano was limited at practice Friday morning. "Milano would be a big part of the mix in handling Kelce. Some of it would also fall on Jordan Poyer and Micah Hyde and possibly a cornerback."
John Murphy serves as the play-by-play voice of the Buffalo Bills radio network, on flagship station WGR 550 in Buffalo.
