The tides turned for the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night. A week after downing the Ottawa Senators, 3-1, in their building, the shoe was suddenly on the other foot. Ottawa used a hat-trick from former Sabres forward Tyler Ennis to coast past Buffalo, 5-0 at the Canadian Tire Centre.
After a quiet opening 16 minutes or so, the Senators struck three times before the horn sounded on the first period. Ennis potted two goals on Aaron Dell, while sandwiched between Ennis' pair was a power play goal from forward Drake Batherson.
Ottawa extended their lead to 4-0 in the middle stanza thanks to a nifty passing play from young centerman, Tim Stützle. He and fellow forward Alex Formenton teamed up on a 2-on-1, with Formenton the beneficiary of a slick pass from Stützle after some pitch-and-catch.
Sitting on two goals, Ennis nailed the trifecta inside the final minute of regulation. It was Ennis' second-career hat-trick, and put the finishing touches on a shutout win for Senators goaltender Matt Murray.
As for Dell, he made 42 saves in defeat.
