Sabres to pick 9th overall in NHL Draft

The Sabres entered the night with the 7th overall selection but wound up falling back two spots.

Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - After another season of missing out on the postseason, the Buffalo Sabres are now on to the 2025 NHL Entry Draft. The Sabres dropped two spots in the draft order and will be picking 9th overall.

This will mark the third time in franchise history the Sabres will draft 9th overall. The other times were:

- 2022: Matthew Savoie
- 1982: Paul Cyr

Some of the best players picked 9th overall in the NHL Draft include Timo Meier, Mikhail Sergachev, and Trevor Zegras.

This year's NHL Draft Lottery format was different from years past. The first overall pick was chosen live, going to the New York Islanders. New York had a 3.5% chance to win the first overall pick. This marks the first time since 2009 that New York will pick first. They selected center John Tavares with that pick. This also marks the fifth time the Islanders will be picking first overall, selecting goalie Rick DiPietro in 2000, defenseman Denis Potvin in 1973 and forward Billy Harris in 1972.

The San Jose Sharks, projected to pick first overall, slotted down one spot and will pick second overall.

The 2025 NHL Entry Draft will be held on June 27 and June 28 from Los Angeles.
