As many as 544 people employed in the sortation operations at Amazon's sprawling Lancaster distribution hub may be losing their jobs as the online retailing behemoth continues to adjust work flow across its vast network of regional centers.
Not impacted by the pending lay offs are more than 500 Amazon employees at the 525,000-square-foot Walden Avenue complex, with those workers focusing on distribution and returns.
The impacted workers will be offered positions at other regional Amazon operations including distribution centers in Pembroke, Rochester, Hamburg and the Town of Tonawanda.
Amazon is also looking to hire at least 1,000 workers for its new Town of Niagara distribution center that's due to open later this summer.
The Lancaster center opened in 2017 and was the first of several Amazon developed in the region.
Amazon's real estate portfolio in New York state includes 10 fulfillment centers and 35 last mile operations hubs. The company has more than 47,500 workers in New York state.
