Forget about the trepidation that followed last fall when Joseph and Lisa Riniolo said they were retiring and closing the Garage restaurant - a popular Hertel Avenue culinary mainstay.

Instead, there is a level of anticipation and excitement with veteran chef Martin Danilowicz re-opening the Garage (1127 Hertel Ave.) later this spring.

"To say people are looking forward to it is an understatement," said Joel Feroleto, Delaware District councilman and Buffalo Common Council president.

An investment group 1127 Hertel Holdings LLC paid $600,000 for the Garage property, according to documents filed Feb. 23 in the Erie County Clerk's office.

The impact of a re-opened the Garage site could run deep within the already busy Hertel Avenue business district.

Given its location - almost at the key intersection of Hertel and Delaware avenues - the Garage is a gateway into a busy stretch of Hertel running from Delaware Avenue to Main Street.

"No doubt, it will help," Feroleto said.

Instead of an empty storefront, Hertel will be welcoming what is likely to be a regional dining destination.

The spin off from that will help other Hertel Avenue businesses including retailers, specialty shops and even other bars and restaurants.

"People will make their way into other (Hertel) businesses," Feroleto said.

The Riniolos converted a former automotive repair shop - hence the name the Garage - and opened the restaurant in 2017.

The Garage drew rave reviews, especially for its weekend brunches.

But, the long hours drained the Riniolos who wanted to spend more time with their family, especially their grandchildren.

"Their business was strong," Feroleto said.

Danilowicz, who couldn't be reached for comment, has a strong reputation not only for the Roost, but also for his Martin Cooks specialty catering business.

"Because of his reputation, his restaurants are a draw," Feroleto said. "And, that can only help Hertel."
