BUFFALO (WBEN) - On Saturday, Buffalo Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash joined Peter Hunt on WBEN for an in-depth, extensive interview regarding a myriad of topics concerning the district.
Amid the pandemic and remote model of education that will be practiced for the foreseeable future, Cash talked about some of the major changes that can't necessarily be measured, such as students having to take more ownership of their education.
"You're going to have to be up to the task of digging in and taking charge of your own education because there's a lot of distractions that occur when you're not in school and the structured classroom setting," said Cash.
Cash also discussed some of the major issues with having a completely remote model of learning, especially given the size and demographic disparity of the district.
"Our systems are excellent; our systems are stable, they're sturdy, they're sound - but we struggle with, and we still need to bridge is this internet access gap," he said.
Of course, last week the city announced a partnership with the Bills that will help significantly in that regard.
"The Pegulas, Terry and Kim, and then the Buffalo Bills players have stepped up and said, 'What can we do?' and they're actually offering out of their first paycheck of the season, to donate up to a million dollars to provide internet access to around 4,500 families," said Cash.
Another interesting item of note in the conversation, surely on the minds of many student-athletes and their families, the status of fall sports and where that currently stands within the district.
"I'm leaning heavily toward canceling fall sports," he began. "The risk is not worth it...when we get into interactions of group play."
