
Batavia, N.Y. (WBEN) - A 10-year-old boy is dead, while his two young siblings are in critical condition following an overnight fire in the City of Batavia.
At around 12:45 a.m. Thursday, firefighters responded to a blaze at 3 Vine Street, where three young siblings were trapped inside the upper apartment.
Initially, police officers made their way to the second floor in an attempt to enter the apartment, but were pushed back by smoke and heat.
Batavia Fire arrived moments later, and made entry into the apartment where they located and rescued three children, ages 4, 10 and 12. The children were the only occupants of the apartment at the time of the fire.
All three children were transported to UMMC, and then to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. The 10-year-old victim was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon, while the other two are in critical condition.
Meanwhile, two city police officers and one city fireman suffered minor injuries, but were treated and resumed working.
The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation.
The department is working alongside the City of Batavia School District to assist the family and members of the school community.
