Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - A poll released by Marist College shows New York City residents want Mayor Eric Adams to step down from office.
According to the poll, 69% of residents want Adam to resign, 30% want him to stay, and 2% are unsure.
Assistant Professor of Political Science and Director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, Dr. Lee Miringoff explained that Andrew Cuomo might have a chance at winning the election, if he decides to throw his name in the hat.
"This is a poll of New York City, not the state. So it's focused mostly on Mayor Adams, but because Cuomo is named as being bandied about, we did put him into the mix," Miringoff stated in an interview with WBEN. "Right now, in response to the question, 'do you want him to run for mayor', 44% of registered voters said yes, 55% said no. Democrats, who would, of course, you'd have to go through a primary process, are 48% yes and 52% no. So, the city's pretty divided on that question."
Miringoff says Adams' needs to figure out a plan if he wants to keep his political career alive.
"Every now and then, a controversy does move through, and about three quarters of New York City residents are familiar with the problems that Mayor Adams is having, legally. In the light of everything else that's going on, I thought that was a very significant number," Miringoff stated. "That, alongside the fact that 81% of New Yorkers don't want Adams to seek reelection. He's got to find a way to resurrect his political career because this is not a pretty picture for him right now."
