(WBEN) - A bill that would require all new vehicles made or sold in the United States to include AM Radio took another step forward.
The AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act passed the House of Representatives last week, and may turn into law soon.
The bill would require the Department of Transportation create a rule that automakers put AM radio in every new car sold in the US. AM Radio has received pushback from car manufacturers who claim that the technology is too costly to include in vehicles, and that the signal may interfere with other technologies, particularly on electric vehicles. Several current EV models do not offer AM radio.
All signs point to the bill having support to pass the Senate, though it's unclear if they will do so before thier midterm election recess. The President has signaled he would sign the bill if it reaches his desk.
The bill passes with some compromise including shortening the sunset provision, which says when the law will phase out, from 10 to eight years.
