San Diego, Calif. (WBEN) - Cyprus, a 9-year-old beluga whale rescued from Marineland this summer, has died at SeaWorld San Diego.

The whale was rescued from the closed Ontario park as part of an international effort on Aug. 22. Cyprus stopped eating two days ago, according to a social media post from SeaWorld on Monday. During an examination, veterinarians found that his intestinal tract did not appear to be functioning properly. The team worked through the night to treat the life-threatening condition, but Cyprus did not survive. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will conduct a necropsy.

Cyprus was brought to the San Diego facility with two other whales. SeaWorld said all three had been eating consistently and doing well after their arrival. The two surviving belugas are in stable condition and remain under close monitoring by park officials.

Six belugas rescued from Marineland over the summer have now died: four at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, one at Oceanogràfic Valencia in Spain and Cyprus at SeaWorld San Diego. A dolphin also died after being relocated to Spain.
