Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The City of Buffalo is now accepting applications for
the 2023 Buffalo Police exam.
Applications are being accepted through May 22. The exam date is June 17.
"You seem to hear two different stories," said Buffalo Police Commissioner Joe Gramaglia on WBEN on Monday. "Someone says they're following in the footsteps of a family member, or they've always wanted to be a police office. Or, you get someone who says I took the test for the heck of it and they've had fantastic career."
For Gramaglia, it's the only job he's ever wanted.
"I actually started my career with the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority Police in 1994. I was hired by Buffalo Police soon after that. I've loved every minute of it," Gramaglia said.
Applicants must be 19 years of age to take the exam and 20 upon appointment as a police officer.
A high school diploma or GED is the minimum education requirement.
Any New York State resident can apply to take the exam, however, all candidates who pass the exam must be a City of Buffalo resident 90 days prior to appointment.
Gramaglia said the department is looking for a wide variety of people to take the exam.
"We want a good representation of our city. We've seen a tremendous rise in our immigrant population. We want people to see a lot of different police officers that look like them and can relate to them," he said.
The salary range for an officer range from $49,588-$82,646 with vacation and health benefits.
The cost to take the exam is $25. For more information, visit the city's website, visit room 1001 at City Hall or call (716)-851-9614.
