(WBEN) - A week later, the impact of the renewed trade war between the US and Canada is still coming into focus.
Some in Canada who are still hopeful at repairing the relationship between the two countries are sounding the alarm that President Trump's rhetoric could be pushing their country toward another, unwanted ally.
"I think the most important thing, and Canadians have done a very poor job at expressing this, is that Canada is a 40 Million person market and it buys everything American," Toronto Sun Columnist Joe Warmington told WBEN Tuesday morning.
But now with new tariffs and no appetite to buy American, he says the nation is quickly turning somewhere else.
"If they want to keep pushing Canada into the hands of China, keep going," Warmington said. "Eventually you're going to have China running this place... You say 'Oh that's silly.' Well, look at the newspaper today and you'll see it right there. There's not a lot of good things happening between Canada and the US and if there were some saner people, maybe less partisan... it's like a marriage. Do you really want to break this up? Are you sure?"
