Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - It's back to the checkout line at Wegmans as the popular supermarket chain is discontinuing its popular Scan app feature beginning Sunday.

The Scan app allowed shoppers to scan their own items as they shopped and quickly checkout independently at the end of their shopping session.

In a statement circulated Monday, Wegmans is blaming losses on the decision to pull the plug on the popular feature.

The Scan app was introduced in April 2020.

The full statement from Wegmans: At the start of the pandemic, we quickly launched our SCAN app to provide contactless in-store shopping. SCAN users have told us they love the app and the convenience it offers. Unfortunately, the losses we feel prevent us from making it available in its current state. We have decided to shut down the app until we can make improvements to meet the needs of our customers and business. We have learned a lot and will continue to introduce new digital solutions to make shopping easier in the future.
