Buffalo Public Schools have released a redacted report that concludes that sexual harassment claims against School Board member Muki Hawkins could not be substantiated. But the attorney representing two female district employees tells WBEN there is more to come.
"It's far from over," said attorney John Elmore."I can tell you that the two women that we represent stand by the truth of the allegations in the notice of claim. These two women are professional, educated women who put their lives at stake, knowing that standing up for themselves, that they would be challenged.
Elmore said within the next 30 days, both women are expected to give testimony, under oath, and after that a civil lawsuit will be filed.
The decision by the district to clear Hawkins is not discouraging Elmore or his clients.
"It hasn't deterred us. It hasn't deterred these courageous women from going forward with this lawsuit," he added.
The district report said Hawkins conduct did not violate board policy and was not unlawful.
The investigation and report was issued by Hodgson Russ, a firm hired by the school board.
The two women are still working for the district, remotely.
A civil case such as this is expected to take a long time. Elmore said it could take three to four years.
Ultimately, he said his clients want to make sure the school district is a safe place for women to work and that sexual harassment is not tolerated and they want financial compensation for the injuries they suffered.
