It's already back to school week for some in Western New York and that means back to the routine.

Dr Michael Cummings, Vice chair of Psychiatry at the University at Buffalo says routines are important.

"Getting your sleep routine back, getting your eating routine back and preparing for the transition several days ahead of time, takes as much friction out of day one as humanly possible."

Cummings also knows it's not always possible.

"It's the end of Summer. There are picnics and family gatherings, and end of summer trips. Do the best you can. The most important thing is getting your sleep and most importantly get up at the same time everyday," he said.

There are often jitters, and then there's anxiety. How can a parent tell the difference between the two?

""When it's persistent or worsening, or kids try not to attend school," explained Cumming. "Or if you see changes in sleeping or eating patterns. That's when you start paying more attention. Reach out to your school or primary care doctor at the point."

Cummings added that a little anxiety is normal. The goal is not to eliminate it, but to teach children that they can manage it

Local districts that are starting school this week include, Ken-Ton, Lockport, West Seneca, Lakeshore, Niagara Falls and Buffalo Public Schools.
