Backyard pools remain open across Western New York despite switch to fall

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Fall has arrived in Western New York, but that doesn't mean people are putting the cover on their pools for the season just yet.

Todd Schupbach, owner of Gary Pools and Leisure, says pool closing season typically begins on Labor Day and ends in the middle of October. Recent "Indian summers", though, have kept many pools open in the early days of autumn.

"People, depending on how they're equipped with their pool, have kept their pools open later to enjoy this beautiful weather that appears to happen more frequently now," said Schupbach in an interview with WBEN.

Temperatures staying in the high 70s this past weekend have certainly contributed to that.

Schupbach says pools equipped with heaters allow the cover to stay off a little longer. Those heaters are becoming more an more popular. That might explain one trend observed by Schupbach.

"We have people who wait until November and December. I was in the backyard today measuring for a safety cover. Not only was that pool open, so was the next door neighbor's," he said.

If you're hoping to score a deal on pool products like chlorine as the season winds down though, don't get your hopes up. Schupbach says prices for pool treatment products tend to stay stable, as the chemicals themselves last longer now.

Pools staying open longer doesn't necessarily mean an increase in business, though.

"If they're having a party or something... and people are coming over and they're gonna buy some pool floats or something like that... that's an obvious benefit," Schupbach said.

That benefit is small, though, Schupbach says. The real benefactors are people who own pools. If you're someone who still has their pool open, make sure to take the next few weeks of pool-closing season to soak it all up.
