Buffalo, NY (WBEN Imagine being a school in Western New York with a name Boston Valley at a time when the Sabres are playing the Boston Bruins in the playoffs. That school is renaming itself for the time being.
Principal Nicole Lauer says a similar idea came about when the Sabres played the Bruins in 2011. "I was actually inspired by a couple of my teachers who recall a time that the Sabres were in the playoffs, also with the Boston Bruins, and at that time, just to show their allegiance to the Sabres, they decided they could not keep the name Boston Valley Elementary during the playoffs, they were going to have to change it to Sabres Valley Elementary, just so everyone was clear, like, we are not aligned with the Boston Bruins. Our hearts belong to the Buffalo Sabres. So they asked me if we could do that again, and I was, was more than willing to make that name change," says Lauer.
Lauer says the sign in front of the school that says Boston Valley Elementary has been updated, and it does now say Sabres Valley School. She adds more Sabre spirit will be showing Thursday. "We're going to all come dressed in our Sabres spirit wear, and around 2:15 we're going to have a parade, and we're going to be cheering, we're going to be playing some Sabres music, and we're going to go out and acknowledge the new name of our school," says Lauer.
The staff came up with this decree: "By the authority vested in the leadership and spirit of our learning community, and in recognition of our pride, unity, and unwavering enthusiasm, it is hereby declared: that for the full duration of Round One of the NHL Playoffs, the institution formerly known as Boston Valley School shall be known as Sabres Valley School. This temporary change reøects our collective excitement, competitive spirit, and dedication to rallying behind the Sabres during this thrilling opening round. Throughout the length of this decree, all references to Boston Valley School shall be replaced with Sabres Valley School in announcements, activities, and school spirit. Upon the conclusion of Round One of the NHL Playoffs, the school shall officially resume its name as Boston Valley School. Proclaimed on this day, with great excitement and team pride, by the collective voice of our school community. Let’s go Sabres!"
