Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Buffalo Police early Friday announced they have recovered the body of a contractor that fell into a well on Bird Island Thursday.
The unidentied private contractor fell into the well at the Buffalo Sewer Authority's Pumping Station on Bird Island Thursday and a Buffalo Police recovery mission was underway along the Niagara River.
"The system connects itself to the Niagara River," Buffalo Police Captain Jeff Rinaldo said. "A rescue began, but it has turned to a recovery operation, and at this point, Buffalo Fire is in charge of this phase."
"Exactly what he was doing at the time he fell, it's not sure," says Fire Commissioner Bill Renaldo. "He did have a vest on, he was not anchored at the time. Once he fell into the space, it's a very intricate intake system, so it's a difficult process to determine where he could have been."
The contractor's name was not released.
