BPS prepares for a return to sports

Basketball will be first to resume

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) As in-person classes are set to resume at Buffalo Public Schools, there is also a plan to resume athletics. A plan will be introduced to district leaders Friday.

Cecelie Owens, Assistant Superintendent for Athletics, says the plan to resume athletics will begin with basketball. "Our superintendent would like to start with basketball first, so we would like to safely implement other sports as time progresses if we can do it safely. If the science is good to move forward, then we will be looking for all sports," says Owens.

Owens says the plan will focus on several things. "How to practice, work out, take care of the equipment and stay safe," says Owens. "Our plan will consist of when to wear masks, how to keep the equipment clean, making sure we reiterate social distancing." She adds each student-athlete will use his or her own water bottle during team activities.

Owens says no spectators will be allowed at any of the games. Her plan will go to the superintendent, and then to the school board for final approval. "I'm very confident this plan will be put in place. We'll share it with principals, who believe in their schools and will be instrumental in the success of athletics at Buffalo Public Schools," says Owens.

In-person instruction begins Monday.
