Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Haul out the holly and tis the season!

Tree lighting ceremonies are set for this weekend in Buffalo and organizers say they're getting closer to returning to normal after last year's events were forced to go virtual because of COVID.

Friday night, Hertel Avenue will be lit up as a 35 foot holiday tree will shine at a 6pm ceremony. "This is the 5th consecutive year, we're having a tree lit on Hertel. Last year, it was done virtually because of all the shutdowns and people are excited to be there in-person," says Councilmember Joel Feroleto.

In addition to the tree lighting, Santa's Mailbox will be set up near the tree for kids to drop off their letters to Santa until December 25th. The Hertel Holiday Walk will begin after the 6pm ceremony, with small businesses being open for extended hours.

Feroleto says it's a sign we're getting back to normal. "It's tradition and getting back together and this is a tradition we missed last year," says Feroleto.

Another event that was virtual last year was the tree lighting at Fountain Plaza. "We're looking forward to crowds back at Fountain Plaza and free skating at Rotary Rink," says Michael Schmand. "It's a special night. You watch the kids light up with the fireworks display, the tree lighting up, and Santa Claus."

Schmand says this marks the start of the free skating season downtown. "In cooperation with Rotary Club of Buffalo and the City of Buffalo, Buffalo Place has managed the operation of this outdoor ice-skating rink for 22 years. Renovations to Fountain Plaza, and the completion of the Cars Sharing Main Street project in this block, continue to provide residents and visitors with an enjoyable and affordable outdoor winter activity."

Schmand says the return of an in-person event is a step closer to pre-COVID normalcy. "We still have a ways to go, but right now, if you take a look at Shea's, I was just talking to the chef at Bijou, and he tells me every night's a sellout," says Schmand. "I want people to be save and vaccinated, come to downtown Buffalo and have a great time."

While skating is outdoors and masks won't be required, they will be needed when visiting Santa or going indoors for skate rentals or concessions.
