Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The Buffalo Common Council is forming a new 11 member Police Advisory Committee that will replace a similar disbanded committee that reviewed the Buffalo Police Department.

Councilman David Rivera says the work of the new committee is 'critically important, and refers to is as, "A board that is sustainable and permanent and going to work with this community."

Rivera tells WBEN the disbanded committee was toxic, with internal problems and six of the 11 members were unhappy.

The initial members to the committee will be appointed by the council and will include at least one member with mental health, legal and criminal justice backgrounds and expertise.

To be eligible for the committee, members must be city residents age 18 or older and the application process begins March 23. Interested residents can find more information on the council's Facebook page or by contacting the council clerk's office.
