Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Calling it "a commitment to doing things the right way," Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan has released his first capital budget spending package.
The $94 million package - that includes $34.1 million for emergency repairs - was delivered to all nine Buffalo Common Council members Monday afternoon.
City Comptroller Barbara Miller-Williams also received a copy of the capital and emergency funding packages.
The projects, for the most part, are not headline grabbing but more in the necessary and overdue categories.
"A city government that works is one that plows the streets on time, picks up the garbage and keeps first responders equipped," Ryan said.
Among the capital items:
- $22.5 million for citywide engineering infrastructure improvements.
- $10.5 million to repair the Louisiana Street Bridge.
- $2.2 million for the West Ferry Life Bridge repairs.
- $9 million for basic roof and other repairs to such city-owned facilities as the North Buffalo Ice Rink, the Autumwood Senior Center and Cazenovia Park pool.
Many of the proposed repairs are proactive, not reactive, Ryan said.
"We can keep reacting to problems after they happen, or we can invest in our infrastructure and take care of things residents depend on before they fail," Ryan said.
The Common Council members will review the spending package and vote on it later this fall.
Miller-Williams must also sign off on the proposed budget.
